Profile
In the great tradition of Canadian folk musicians, singer/songwriter Zaac Pick wears his heart on his sleeve. His debut solo album, Fierce Wind is a personal storybook of experience and memory. Produced by Daniel Mendez (Dashboard Confessional, Duran Duran) and recorded primarily in Pick’s Vancouver kitchen, the album is sparse and unencumbered, finding its strength in skilled songwriting and smooth, steady vocals.
Released in 2009, the album quickly garnered the attention of several film and television producers. Songs “Drifters” and “Bad Dream” were featured on separate episodes of the CW network drama, One Tree Hill, and “Maybelline” on CBS’s Ghost Whisperer.
Though Fierce Wind is his first solo project, Pick is already a seasoned musician and songwriter, after a seven-year run with Vancouver band Doubting Paris, where he handled guitar, keyboard, and backing vocal duties.
Two albums and a handful of tours through Canada and Europe brought the four-piece band numerous accolades, including spots on MTV's the Real World, America's Next Top Model and Joan of Arcadia, and opening slots for UK sensation Keane, as well as Canadian talents, Stabilo and David Usher.
When Doubting Paris disbanded in 2008, Pick immediately set to writing his own material, retaining the layers of meaning found in the songs he penned for the band, but breaking his sound down to create the melodic, understated tracks on Fierce Wind.
Since the release, Pick has been busy performing his songs from Alberta to Washington and Vancouver Island; with a short UK tour including stops in Belfast, Edinburgh, Oxford, and London. Whether performing solo, duo, or with a five-piece band, Pick’s woodsy melodies challenge listeners to wind-down and take stock.
